Welcome to the 2005-2006 school year! My classroom verse is I Corinthians 9:24... "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize." My hope and prayer is that each student will "run the race to win" in three areas: academically, socially, and spiritually. Encouraging and helping each student to succeed in these three areas will be my goal for the year. BULLETIN BOARD PROJECT... Every student that has social studies with me has been placed into a group with two to three other students to complete and display a bulletin board. The groups and due dates are posted in each classroom. PLEASE DETERMINE YOUR DUE DATE FROM THOSE POSTED LISTS IMMEDIATELY SO THAT YOU DO NOT MISS YOUR DEADLINE! The students will have FOUR WEEKS to work together OUTSIDE OF CLASS. There are a few guidelines that must be followed (and these will be discussed thoroughly in class): 1) The project must be on a current event APPROVED BY ME. 2) The group must use three sources (the internet, newspapers, and magazines). 3) It should be artistic, creative, and eye-catching. 4) Cooperation within the group is very important. 5) The group is responsible for completing the entire bulletin board project by the assigned date. 6) Each member should demonstrate that some new information was learned - the best way of doing this is to have each member write a brief synopsis about a specific facet of the topic. BE SURE TO PACE YOURSELVES WELL! During the four week period given for this project, try to divide your time up. During the first week, locate a current event that has a lot of information available and okay it with me. During week two, discuss how you will display/present your topic. Divide the responsibilities so that each member shares in the effort. The third week should be used to look at all that has been assembled to see if there is anything missing that should be added quickly. The fourth and final week should be for mounting the project on the classroom bulletin board. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU SCHEDULE TIME WITH THE GIVEN HOMEROOM TEACHER (PLENTY OF TIME IN ADVANCE) WHEN PUTTING IT UP! Of course, these are guidelines; each group should decide for themselves how they wish to pace their project... The project grade will carry the weight of a test grade. All sixth grade teachers will take part in grading the boards, but the earned grade will be averaged into the students' FOURTH QUARTER SOCIAL STUDIES GRADE. If you need further information, please see me. Sincerely, Mr. Heck FLORIDA PANTHERS HOCKEY... NOTHING COOLER!!!
