KINDERGARTEN:FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I celebrate my child’s birthday at school?
Parents are most welcome to join us on their child’s birthday at recess time, 10:00-10:30.  You are welcome to bring a treat to share with the class.  If you are planning a birthday party at home, please send the invitations by mail, or call the children on the phone.  To avoid hurt feelings, invitations will only be distributed by the teacher if ALL the students are included.

Will my child receive a report card?
Yes. Your child will receive three report cards.  The first one will be given to you in person by the teacher at a parent-teacher conference.  The conference will be held around November/December.  The second report card will be given around March.  The third report card will be given in June, on the last day of school.  The report card was devised by the Archdiocese and is developmental in nature.

When can I help in the classroom?
Sign-up sheets will be available at Back-To-School Night.  Please contact the room moms for volunteer opportunities.  Volunteer opportunities are also available at the Church.

What is Edible Alphabet?
Every Friday the students are treated to a snack before they go home at 12:45.  To make it an educational experience, we “eat our way through the alphabet.”  For example, our first snack might be apple juice, and apple muffins.  Parent volunteers provide and serve the snack 15 minutes before the class’s scheduled time.  K-O will start at 11:30 and K-P will start at 12:10.  The children love to end the week this way.  If you love a challenge, sign up for Q or X week!!

What is D’Nealian Handwriting?
It doesn’t look like the way I learned to print.  The children will be writing in a technique called D’Nealian handwriting (or Modern Manuscript).  This will teach them to slant letters and numbers slightly to the right, and to add a small “tail” on the end of the letters.  The educational purpose is to better prepare them to write in cursive in the future.  A sample will be given to you during Back-to -School Night.

Do the children really nap at rest time?
The Archdiocese recommends that a full day Kindergarten include time for rest.  Your child will have a mat to lie down on for approximately 30 minutes after lunch.  Yes, a few students even fall asleep!  It is a long day for our children and we try to be sensitive to their needs.

When do the children go to Mass and can I join them?
Kindergarteners attend Mass on the every Thursday and the First Friday of each month at 8:10.  We sit with our 5th grade buddies in the main Church.

When is the teacher available to conference if I have a concern?
The best way to contact the teacher is to call the school office , email, or drop them a note.  They will get back to you as soon as possible, and schedule a conference.  We are always happy to communicate with the parents about their child’s progress.  Please avoid conferencing in the morning or during pick up time – the teachers are trying to attend to their students during these times.  Email is also a convenient way to contact them:
